Cast Away your troubles in the New Decade

2 Thessalonians, Chapter 1 verses 3 through 6 reads as follows:

3 We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other are increasing. 4 Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.

5 All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. 6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8

These verses speak of a judgment of the Lord that is ongoing rather than a final judgment.

From this there should be alertness as to what the ongoing judgment of the Lord is. In the positive sense the brothers and sisters had an increasing faith and demonstrated an increasing love for each other. This would be something that was ongoing and changing, in this case in a positive direction.

They had trials and persecutions, some of which may have had nothing to do with other people bothering them but some did. This was something that didn’t have to happen, they could have been left alone, but others chose out of free will to bother and or persecute them.

This was something that was observed by the Lord, and would not be without punishment in the here and now, as it said specifically that the Lord would be pay back trouble to those who trouble you.

The trouble they brought on others, would come back to haunt them.

The Lord himself would pay back for these troubles they brought upon those who were directing their attention towards Him.

But rather than the specifics of this case, and the ongoing premise that those who are troubled by outsiders who are intent towards the Lord being defending by the Lord, there is the principle that the Lord knows what trouble is all about, whether it be from this origin or that origin and whatever form these troubles might take

People have relationship troubles, job troubles, and all sorts of troubles that can follow them into the future or interrupt good plans in the present.

What these verses show is that the Lord himself does not divorce from troubles, but comes right into the midst of the troubles that are out there and right here and works upon them in accordance with his judgment.

The presence of the Lord to Paul who is writing this letter and to those to whom he is writing, is that the Lord will give relief to these specific troubles, which where particular troubles upon those individuals at that time.

But the premise is the same for now and these days that the Lord depending upon his ongoing judgment may bring relief to troubles.

This verses show that the Lord is seeing right into the midst of your troubles and will act upon them for relief of the troubles. The prayer of thanksgiving can be given in advance for the relief of these particular troubles.

Problems have a close akin to the word troubles, and a personal application is that prayer can be constructed where you would ask the Lord to bring you to what would be the realms of relief from this trouble. What exactly would relieve you from this trouble might be only partially or generally known, or it might not be known at all, as otherwise you might trade one set of problems for another set of problems that could even be worse.

But generally the prayer discussion and meditation would be along the lines of what would bring relief to these troubles.

The other aspect is that you would ask for the revelation or revealing of the Lord’s thoughts upon these troubles as verse 6 speaks of the revealing.

The imagery brought forth is one of power including the presence of powerful angels and the prayer discussion regarding troubles should include the request for angels and their powerful actions in bringing relief to troubles.

The hope presented in these verses is that the Lord has your troubles and difficulties in his sights and the relief spoken of has a present time application. These verses are not talking about the Lord relieving troubles sometime in the far future, but in the very presence of these troubles.

For example, even those who had offended the servants of the Lord, would likely be paid back in kind so that they would know that there prior actions had quickly come back to them.

There would be a model of swiftness as to the actions of the Lord and the angels with regards to troubles and of course some troubles are real time.

If someone is caught swimming in dangerous currents, they need immediate assistance or the consequences may be dire.

Overall, it is not obvious that someone should automically assume they are stuck with troubles and just have to live with them. The troubles should be brought to the Lord in prayer, the request should be made towards relief and the Lord is the best expert for the relief of any possible trouble out there.

Cognizance should be given to the existence of angels and how they are there in part to assist in help and relief in troubles and that they are amazingly powerful.

Troubles will continually arise in the new decade.

But there is a hope for this time around that if emphasis is put on seeking the help of the Lord for them, enduring relief can be found and freedom from these troubles can be had.

In the movie Cast Away, we have the strong image of Tom Hanks being alone and trapped in his aloneness on a deserted island whose whereabouts were unknown to anybody.

But the Lord Jesus knows where you are, what your troubles are and it isn’t you that will be castaway or cast aside with his aid, but it is your troubles that will be sent on yonder, where they can’t be found or located, either by you or anyone else.

So get with the program and start to cast away your troubles as we begin the new decade.
