A request for her hand in marriage might just be the best Valentine’s Day gift a woman could ask for — so why not go for it this year? You shouldn’t go leaping into anything if you’re not ready, but if you love her and she loves you and you want to spend the rest of your lives together, pick out that wedding jewelry and have at it! If you’re stumped about how to actually propose, here are a few of the best movie marriage proposals for inspiration:

1. Stepmom. While Julia Roberts character, Isabel, peacefully, Ed Harris’, Luke, appears and wakes her with a ring box — which holds a spool of thread. He ties one end to her ring finger, saying he let the thread break once (alluding to his ex-wife) and won’t do it again, then lets her new wedding jewelry slide down the thread to her finger.

2. Sweet Home Alabama. Melanie (Reese Witherspoon) really had it made in this movie. She got not one, but two great proposals: one as a little girl, when her childhood sweetheart and eventual husband, Jake (Josh Lucas) tells her he wants to be married to her so he can kiss her whenever he wants, and one as an adult, when new beau Andrew (Patrick Dempsey) brings her to Tiffany’s after hours and tells her to “pick one.” In the end she stays with Jake, but Andrew probably had no trouble finding a new lady with skills like those!

3. Gone With the Wind. Pretty much everything about this movie is insanely intense, and Rhett Butler’s (Clark Gable) proposal to Scarlett O’Hara is no exception. It’s not really even a proposal, so much as a demand — she tells him she’ll never marry again, to which he responds, “Oh yes you will. And you’ll marry me.” Of course, his whole “Frankly dear, I don’t give a damn” what happens to you line kind of kills the romance, but hey, it’s still a great proposal.

4. While You Were Sleeping. In this, Sandra Bullock’s Lucy, a tollbooth agent, is head over heels for Peter Gallagher (called Peter in the movie as well). However, when he slips into a coma and she pretends to be his fiancée, she gets close with his family — enough to fall in love with his brother, Jack (Bill Pullman). It’s all very convoluted and confusing, but it ends with Jack, surrounded by his family, dropping a woman’s diamond ring into Lucy’s tollbooth token tray. Too adorable.

5. You’ve Got Mail. Here’s the thing about You’ve Got Mail: technically, there’s no proposal, but what Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) says to Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) — “I would have asked for your number, and I wouldn’t have been able to wait twenty-four hours before calling you and saying, ‘Hey, how about… oh, how about some coffee or, you know, drinks or dinner or a movie… for as long as we both shall live?’” — is just as good!
