Physical and Mental Handicaps in Movies?

I hope this doesn’t come off as insensitive because I’m really undecided and just looking for other people’s objective thoughts. Actors that portray characters with mental or physical handicaps often get rave reviews and even win a lot of Oscars for their performances. I’m thinking of Tom Hanks in “Forrest Gump,” Leonardo DiCaprio in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Billy Bob Thornton in “Sling Blade,” Sean Penn in “I Am Sam,” Cuba Gooding Jr. in “Radio.” And etc., the list is long.

My question is, do you think the sympathy factor comes into play here very much, or is it strictly and solely because those types of characters are considered more difficult to portray convincingly?

Hmm… good question..

There’s probably some sympathy factor involved, but I do think that those kinds of characters ARE hard to portray convincingly, like you said.. I think Tom Hanks, SEan Penn, and cuba Gooding did EXCELLENT jobs. Me myself watching those movies, I always saw it as incredible talent to be able to do the kind of job they did, making you connect with those characters.

So, I guess it’s the actor’s talent MAKING you sympathize with those kinds of people.. drawing you into their world and helping you see the world through their eyes.
