Applying Microformats and RDFa in Search Engine Optimization
The atmosphere in the business of search engine optimization is so cutthroat these days that it is very hard for companies to get over the competition. Though the demand is still very strong, there are just a lot of groups that call themselves an SEO company, some of which, unfortunately, are fraudulent ones.
Fortunately, an emerging addition to web development can give your company the boost that it needs by bringing cutting-edge techniques in search engine optimization. Resource Description Frameworks in attributes or simply RDFa and a similar approach called Microformats will help an SEO company offer something new to clients, delivering clear results.
What Tagging Did Before
Ever since the creation of the World Wide Web, the ability to properly understand the content of web pages automatically has been limited by the underpowered markup tags attached to websites. The meta data, as they were called, were technically just texts that provide description to pages, but search engines do not understand them. The result then becomes totally confusing, and Internet users end up getting disappointed of the results they’re getting from their queries.
For example, if you are looking for the movie Philadelphia and type “Blu ray Philadelphia,” you will end up with pages listing available Blu ray titles in video stores across Philadelphia. This becomes very disappointing when all you wanted was to look for an online store selling the Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington starrer. Similar results appear thousands of times in a day since search engines simply can’t tell between keywords.
What does RDFa and Microformats Do
Now websites can be fitted with either Microformat or RDFa to basically add more functions to the meta data these websites contain. This means search engines will understand meta data more clearly. In the above example, a search engine will be able to distinguish between the place and the movie. At the same time, the relationship betweens tags can be easily identified. All this will result in better and easier searches as well as faster and more sensible results.
How Can an SEO Company Capitalize on All This
Google is calling their version Rich Snippets, which are essentially a smart way of inserting annotations to a website. SEO companies should realize how easier it is now for the websites of their clients to found by their target audience. If there is a way to modify your clients’ sites to include rich snippets as their meta data, it will be a plus. Another method is to head over to microformats.org, and the website will automatically generate a script that can be inserted to a website.
Finally, an SEO company can use this as a major selling point to future clients. Showcasing your company’s ability to invest on new methods to influence search results by Google and Yahoo will definitely attract more projects.
Banking on the Future
Indeed, it has been only been recently that the major search engines have considered indexing Microformat and RDFa in websites. And even though the indexing is not affecting results pages just yet, it cannot be argued that this is where the future will be headed. Being able to recognize this will surely put an SEO company in the lead.
