how much of a role did Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg make in The Pacific?

My friends and I are having an argument over how they feel that The Pacific was Spielberg and Hank’s vision and that they were the main leaders of the project. I look on IMdb and see that they are executive producers so my question really is how important are executive producers to a show like The Pacific? Would this show have been as epic without Spielberg or Hanks involved?

Executive Producers have no input creativity-wise. They funded the project, that’s about it.
