The Best Films Come in Threes
The summer blockbuster season saw a number of Oscar-nominated films released. The film trailers whet the audience’s appetite, but you never know how successful your film is going to be until it is released. Some of the summer blockbuster films will become classics, some will be re released again later and others will form part of a trilogy.
1985 was the year one of the most successful trilogy films of the decade premiered – Back to the Future. It was the story about a teenager who accidently goes back in time to the year 1955 when his parents are in high school. Unfortunately for him, he attracts his mother’s romantic interest putting his own existence at risk.
It was the movie that would make Michael J Fox famous worldwide, although he was previously already known through his Family Ties TV series in the US. The film grossed $380 million worldwide and marked the beginning of a franchise. The second film grossed £331.95 million and the third $244.53 million. The film also won Academy Awards and Golden Globe nominations. It was even selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2007. If you go to Universal Studios, you can take part in the theme park ride.
Toy Story has proved to be another success. The first film was released in 1995, which follows a group of toys who pretend to be lifeless around humans but come to life when they leave the room. The film stars Tim Allen and Tom Hanks, the two main characters , the new Buzz Lightyear and Woody cowboy action figure. The first film grossed $261 million worldwide. It was such a success that four years later, the second film was released and generated $485 million. Toy Story 3 made film history as it became the first even Pixar film and animated film to makeover $1 billion worldwide. Normally the third films of a trilogy don’t generate as much revenue as the first ones.
