can isolation cause “Dementia” much the same way as in the Tom Hanks movie “Castaway”?

if i remember right the storyline in the movie was Tom Hanks crashing a Fed EX plane onto a deserted island and he was able to survive on this island for 10 years? and during that time he slowly became “Demented” ? was this due to his isolation? and WHAT IS DEMENTIA? WHAT PEOPLE BECOME LIKE DURING IT? and was the case with Tom Hanks a good description of what a person with dementia becomes like ? and why, how isolation or what causes this? (even at ANY age?) also, why do older people get this often times?

HOW WAS TOM HANKS CURED IN THE MOVIE? AND WHY?

I dont think the film intended to depict Hanks as demented … rather than he learned to adapt and survive, which meant developing some strange ways. His need for companionship led him initially into make-believe but then into dependency upon the pseudo-companion. But he was not mad – he was in charge of all his faculties, or he wouldn’t have survived. Also, once he was rescued he was able to convert back to the normality of relating to other people again. It is an intrinsic human need to have some some of interaction with others and isolated people can develop unsociable habits or strange ways simply because there is no one there to modify their behaviour for them. Dementia is something different. But the mind, like all muscles, follows the law of nature ‘if you dont use it, you lose it’ and under=stimulated minds can degenerate more quickly in old age than the minds of people who engage in various mental and social interactions.
