Why would the Defense Threat Reduction Agency be funding research into anti-matter?

Do we need to inform Tom Hanks?

Well antimatter weapons once created would be the most deadly weapon ever to be created in the history of mankind. Using 1kg of antimatter and neutralizing it with matter assuming that only half the amount of energy would escape harmlessly (to understand the energy escape would require huge amounts of knowledge in physics) would be equalent to 20 megaton thermonuclear bomb. One big explosion. Perhaps the threat of such a dangerous weapon could be better countered once they figure out how it works.
