Saving Private Ryan?

Ive been watching Saving Private Ryan and I would like to know how Jeremy Davies didnt even get an Academy Awards or a Golden Globe nomination for his performance. Anyone want to enlighten me.

Best performances from Saving Private Ryan, in order of best to least best, because they were all great.

Jeremy Davies
Edward Burns
Matt Damon
Giovanni Ribisi
Tom Sizemore
Barry Pepper
Adam Goldberg
there is a lot more than just kicking ass dude. Jeremy Davies was amazing in that role. Matt Damon was just perfect even in the small role he had.

Yours is a good question, unfortunately there are no simple answers to the dilemma of why NO nominations for Supporting Actor in a wonderful cast.

The Academy can be fickle, and sometimes, the fact that there are so many good performaces in a large cast of supporting actors works against them all; they, in effect, “split” their impact, and people may vote for one actor, and another voter for another. But, actors in other films may have more impact if they are the single outstanding role in a film

Just for your information, here are the five actors who were nominated in 1998, the year Saving Private Ryan was eligible:

James Coburn, AFFLICTION
Robert Duvall, A CIVIL ACTION
Ed Harris, THE TRUMAN SHOW
Geoffrey Rush, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE
Billy Bob Thornton, A SIMPLE PLAN

Of course, Coburn, a popular favorite, won the award (probably for a career rather than that one role.) . The other four had already received nominations in previous films (Duvall, Rush and Thornton had, in fact, already won Oscars in prior years, and Harris had been nominated.) All of their roles were substantial ones in their pictures.

As far as Saving Private Ryan is concerned, only Tom Hanks received an Oscar nomination, for Best Actor. He lost to Roberto Benigni in one of the most unexpected upsets in the history of the Academy Awards. (Hanks had already won two Oscars for Best Actor–for Philadelphia and for Forrest Gump.) My best guess is that the Academy did not want to give a third Oscar to Hanks in a decade. The other nominees were in obscure and lesser-known pictures. And Benigni was excellent in the role of a lifetime for the Italian actor.
