How can I remove a tooth without going to the dentist?

I’m out of a job right now so I can’t really afford to see a dentist. I’ve got a tooth in my mouth where part of it has fallen apart, and the rest of it really hurts. When I try to brush my teeth around that area the pain is too much so I just avoid it. I have to chew with the right side of my mouth to eat without pain.

It’s obvious to me that the tooth has to go. Now, I remember that scene from Castaway, where Tom Hanks knocks his tooth out with an ice skate. Does that really work? I’ve also heard about tying a string around your tooth to a door knob then having a friend slam the door shut. How about that?

At this point, I’m willing to try anything. If I can’t get it taken care of by this weekend, I’m going to have my friend Steve come over with a pair of plyers.

Call your dentist any way. If you don’t have one, call ANY dentist. Tell them your situation (briefly), and ask if there is a county health clinic or a dental school in your area that will do the work for free or at a reduced price.

If you try to knock it out yourself, or have someone remove it with a pair of pliers, you’re just asking for a tooth that breaks off below the gum line, a really good chance for an infection, and a bloody, painful mess. And the first two of these will probably cost you more in the long run than going to the clinic.
