What’s the most polite cure or fix it for when a stranger rambles to you in public?

((this happens to me quite a lot, i am told i have a face that makes people want to talk–dont know if its good or bad))

clarification: I take my son to get his haircut. while he’s busy doing that and i’m trying to read a magazine, the male shop owner, begins talking about how he hates a song on the radio and he launched into the following topics in 15 minutes:
fiddler on the roof
jewish playwriters
apollo13
the making of holloywood movies
tom hanks filmography
the pathetic education system of today
and also managed to lecture me about how people dont know Buzz Alden was the 2nd man on the moon.

I tried to look away, read a magazine, etc. had he just wanted to mention 1 topic i could understand, but frankly i think it was rude of him to talk AT me.
what do polite people do in this situation?

I know what you mean…I have one of “those faces”, too…people start talking to me in lines, in the grocery isle, everywhere I go…
Sometimes, when people start talking “at” me like that, I try to find someway to add to their “topic” or make a joke…
Some people have a hard time with “uncomfortable silence” and think they have to fill the air with talk…(my Mom is like that)…sometimes, I act REALLY engrossed in what I’m reading (even “taking notes”!!) so that my “silence” will be perceived as that I just didn’t hear what they were saying…or look up every-now-and-then, and say, “I’m sorry, I was so engrossed in my reading, I failed to hear what you said”…That one usually shuts them up…(The ones who can “get” the hint!)…
Currently, I have a cast on my wrist, and people EVERYWHERE I go ask “what happened?”…so, just for fun I’ve been telling them “I was patting myself on the back and it got out of hand”…
I LOVE the looks I get…lol
