In the movie Cast Away, where did Tom Hanks go when the movie end?

did he go back to that ladies house, or did he go back to the island?

The ending is quite interesting for a few reasons… It’s ironic that it took him so long, several years to be “found” and now that he’s back home, he’s “lost” all over again. I think the crossroads is an amazing ending. Where is home? Where is happiness? He had come all the way back just to lose Kelly again, the question you have to ask is, where is Chuck happiest? 1- Back home without her, or 2) on the island with her?

Second, it’s noteworthy to say that there is some kind of transcending moment in the end when Hanks looks into the camera with a slight smile and bent brow. Is he Chuck Knoland at this point? Is he Tom Hanks? He is looking directly into the camera, not in a direction, which begs the question, why?

You could also argue in the end that the “tide” just brought something (or rather, someone) in…
