Larry Crowne (2011) Review

Larry Crowne the film has been receiving quite a bit of hype given the fact that not only does it star the brilliant Tom Hanks next to America’s Sweetheart Julia Roberts, but also because that its Hanks first time out of the gate directing, starring, producing, and writing a film. The script for the screenplay is entirely original and the work of Hanks own imagination along with aid from co-writer Nia Vardalos and tells the basic story of main character Larry who can best be summed up as an out of love, out of luck middle aged man that is heading to community college in the hopes of finally getting somewhere in life.

Of course, as soon as he gets to college he meets the less than fabulous Mercedes Tainot played by Roberts who pretty much hates her job and her perverted husband. Just as she is about to cancel the class due to low attendance Larry Crowne comes bursting through the doors true to form full of innocence and hope. Soon they fall in love and Larry helps Mercedes to fall back in love with life, teaching, and him although not all in that order.

While it may seem like this is just another rom-com with the standard start and close, somehow Larry Crowne manages to get past the edge of being another substandard romantic comedy and instead gets close to being something that is memorable. Of course, a great deal of this is not due to the screen or directing, but instead the great acting performances of Julia and Hank who prove exactly why they are known around Hollywood for being A-list stars, because while you may recognize pieces of their characters, they are simply fun to watch.

Hanks makes Larry Crown into the perfect picture of innocence mixed with good intentions that were previously seen from his turn at Forest Gump but in a much more real way because Larry is simply working at bettering his life and really wants this new voyage to work out which Hanks perfectly portrays. Hanks has truly learned to master how to play a character that you want to love and sit beside because every ounce of emotion that comes out of Larry comes out you as well as you empathize with every step that he takes.

At the same time, Roberts offers her own touch to the film given the fact that it is clear that she has great on screen chemistry with Hanks as she does a wonderful job of playing her disconnected character slowly warming up on an even pace as the film progresses. However, in terms of comedy she does not have much to offer to her scenes alone but the scene in which she is drunk and over-the-top is quite hilarious to watch. Both those who love who Hanks and those who just want a nice romp with a rom-com will enjoy the show.
