Who is your favorite songwriter from the last century?

P.S. I am not a fan of Wikipedia as a source. A website that will pull up “Bonfire of the Vanities” as a Tom Hanks movie and not an event in history has it’s priorities gravely out of order.

Is it okay if I mention a few? (It’s so hard to whittle it down!)

First, I just want to say that when I hear the word “songwriter,” I think primarily of lyricists. So I hope you don’t mind if I focus on my favorite lyricists (with samples of their creations):
