This is silly. The word “American” has no ethical value of itself other than that which you want to see in it.

If you think America stands for equality then yes, prop 8 is “un-American” because it does not support equality. However, some people think that “American” is synonym with religious scripture and the oppression of minorities (as seen in America’s dark history) so in that case prop 8 is completely American because it defends the big religions against the smaller ones and oppresses minorities.

It depends what you want to see in the idea of America.

So yes, he should probably apologise because if you take the second meaning of the term “American”, Mormons have been very American indeed, wielding their economic power to oppress a minority.
