Tom Hanks: Overrated?

I think he’s a good actor, but not great. People make all this fuss over him, and talking about how he is so brilliant. I think it’s beacause of those two back to back Oscars (which were not exactly deserved). If he hadn’t won two at a young age, then he wouldn’t be the youngest recipient for the AFI Lifetime Achivement Award. He wouldn’t be who is today without those statuettes, i don’t think. And don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against him, I just don’t think he’s that great of an actor.

It is all a matter of opinion as to what is considered great acting and who is deserving of its accolades. I have to say that I have never been let down by a Tom Hanks film. He is the only actor I can say that about. Sure everybody says he is believable in his portrayals and this is true, but I don’t believe that is what makes him truly special. He is just your average Joe. I think anybody can identify with him on one level or another. That is what makes him more real to movie-goers. When you can associate yourself with the person you are watching, you can sympathize with them. You become enveloped in their story. Isn’t that what it is all about really?
